Pilates Equipment Guide: Everything You Need to Know

A beginner-friendly breakdown of the essential gear for your practice

Whether you’re setting up a home studio or stepping into a Pilates class for the first time, understanding the equipment can feel overwhelming. This guide breaks down the most common pieces of Pilates equipment — what they do, who they’re for, and whether you actually need them.

1. The Pilates Mat

A Pilates mat is thicker than a standard yoga mat (typically 10–15mm) to cushion your spine during rolling exercises. It’s your most essential piece of equipment — every Pilates practice begins here. Look for dense, non-slip material that supports your joints without bottoming out. Budget: $25–$80.

2. The Reformer

The reformer is the signature Pilates machine — a sliding carriage with adjustable spring resistance. It enables over 100 exercises targeting every muscle group. Studio-quality reformers range from $1,500–$5,000, but foldable home models start around $300. Best suited for intermediate practitioners or those taking studio classes.

3. Resistance Bands

Resistance bands add variable tension to mat exercises, making them more challenging without heavy equipment. They’re portable, affordable ($10–$30 for a set), and perfect for targeting arms, glutes, and inner thighs. Choose looped bands for lower-body work and long bands with handles for upper-body exercises.

4. The Stability Ball

A stability ball (also called a Swiss ball) challenges your core by creating an unstable surface. It’s excellent for improving balance, spinal mobility, and deep stabiliser strength. Choose a size based on your height: 55cm if under 5’4″, 65cm for 5’4″–5’10”, and 75cm if taller. Budget: $15–$40.
